About the Author

Lowell F. Volk is a native of Minnesota, currently retired and living in Pleasant View, Colorado, where he is a member of the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Posse. Lowell and his wife, Mary Lou, have five children: Terri, Scott, Paula, Lowell Jr., and Kathy.

Lowell has an MBA from the University of La Verne and enjoys horseback riding, deer and elk hunting, and early American history.

Dave McDarby of Gold Rush Graphix will explain the basics of video making – everything from script writing to sound to lighting.  Victoria Petersen of the Mancos Public Library will be going over effective video marketing strategies: the social aspects of video placement, and marketing your video on your website.

The Cliff Dwellings Speak

About the Book:

“For years we struggled to get to remote cliff dwellings – from the Four Corners Region to the Sierra Madres in Mexico – only to be disappointed when we arrived. To our non-professional eyes there appeared to be very little left. The cliff dwellings were mute for us.

We were frustrated – we sensed each one of them had a story to tell, but we could not decipher it. What could cliff dwellings possibly tell casual visitors like us?

And then one day doing library research we stumbled across papers of the early archaeologists from the turn of the twentieth century — before there was much science to apply to the study of archaeology. The observation techniques they developed were perfect for casual visitors like us — now we could fathom at least some of the mysteries of the ancient ruins. For example, what it means when we encounter walls that are heavily smoke-blackened. Or, how to train our eyes to see the wooden pegs imbedded in the walls and what that might mean. Suddenly the ancient cliff ruins did not seem so inscrutable anymore. We were spellbound!

This book will guide you around a site in Sherlock Holmes fashion, giving you very real tools for understanding cliff dwellings. Beginning with preservation – that is, the proper way to visit them without inadvertently inflicting damage. It asks the question why they might have built these spectacular ruins. Carefully interwoven with the archaeology is the ethnography of the modern Pueblo people– the descendants of the cliff dwellers.”

About the Authors:  Bill and Beth Sagstetter are a photographer/writer team living in Denver. They have been researching, writing, photographing and filming western and southwestern U.S. subjects for forty years.

Their byline appears on hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles, a dozen films and three best-selling books. One of their films won an award at the 1978 Aspen Arts Film Festival.

Their newest book, The Cliff Dwellings Speak is the culmination of a lifetime of exploration and research of the cliff dwellings from Southwestern Colorado to Northern Mexico.

Social Media can help your organization engage more constituents, raise more money, or bring your mission to new audiences. Don’t know where to start? Come to this session and learn the basics about major social media tools available to nonprofit organizations, and how to decide if your organization should use them, how to get started, and how to measure the return on investment. The session will include visits to social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, and others), plus a look at how other nonprofits have successfully used social media tools.

It has been a wonderful year in our new LEED Gold Certified Library. We couldn’t have made it this far without all of you, and we’d love to see you for this special milestone.

We will be giving library tours, playing old-fashioned birthday games, and enjoying refreshments.

Your ‘presence’ is welcome – we will have activities for all ages. Come celebrate with us!

This writing workshop, “Back to the Loin Cloth:  Hunting & Gathering the Sustenance of Story,”  is open to all – no writing experience is needed.  Hosted by Telluride’s Wilkinson Public Library and Between the Covers Bookstore, the cost is $75.00 per person and you need not be a serious writer to enjoy our antics.  You can register by calling the library and asking for Scott, 970-728-4519.

Also, on Saturday Evening, the 26th, at 6 pm, the library will also host the two authors in a FREE “he said, she said” improvisational storytelling performance.  Who knows how this thing will go, if spears will be hurled, but you can be sure to have a few good laughs at their expense.  It is free and open to the public, and they will sign books afterwards as well.
